Middlesex County Library is excited to offer high quality films, documentaries, children's content and more to our patrons via the Kanopy.  Kanopy is available as an app for both Apple and Android, can be enjoyed in your web browser and streamed to your tv via Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast and more!

Do I need to sign up for a Kanopy account to use the platform?

Yes, you will need to use an email address to create a Kanopy account. The first time you visit Kanopy, click the orange "Add Library Card" button. Enter your Middlesex County Library card number (include the zero, do not use spaces) and click continue. You can use your Google or Facebook account to login, or create a dedicated Kanopy account by entering your name, email address and creating a password. Kanopy will send you an email to verify your address. Make sure you will remember the email address and password, as this is what you'll use to login to Kanopy going forward.

How many movies can I stream each month?

Play credits are used to play videos on Kanopy.  Each Middlesex County Library patron has 6 play credits to use each month. Play credits are used after 5 seconds of viewing; you are then able to watch the video as many times as you'd like for 72 hours.  Credits reset at the start of every month. Videos that are part of Kanopy Kids and The Great Courses do not use play credits, more information on these can be found below.

How can I place holds on Kanopy items?

No need to place holds! Kanopy offers simultaneous access to all content.

What mobile devices are compatible with Kanopy?

Kanopy has apps available for both Apple and Android devices, as well as Amazon Fire tablets. Kanopy is not compatible with mobile browsers. For more information on device compatibility visit the Kanopy Mobile Apps support page.

How do I stream Kanopy on my television?

A Kanopy app is currently available for the devices listed below. If you do not have access to any of these devices, you can also view Kanopy on your television by connecting a computer using an HDMI cable. Can I watch Kanopy on my computer?

Yes, Kanopy can be watched in your web browser on your computer. Visit the Kanopy support site to learn more about which browsers and systems are supported.

Do I need an Internet connection to play videos from Kanopy?

Yes, you must be connected to the Internet in order to stream from Kanopy; you are not able to download films for offline viewing.  Kanopy's video play incorporates an auto-bandwith technology which allows Kanopy to adjust the quality of the video based on the strength of your internet connection.  It will adjust automatically to provide you with the highest quality of video your connection can manage to minimize and avoid buffering.  

How can I suggest a film for Kanopy?

The films featured on Kanopy are not selected by Middlesex County Library, there are selected by Kanopy's content team.  You can suggest a film on their website, note that they ask that you provide a link to the film's IMDB entry to ensure they find the right film.

What is Kanopy Kids and how do I set parental controls?

Kanopy Kids is a selection of curated content aimed at kids ages 2-8. Accessing Kanopy Kids does not use any play credits and access to all the content is unlimited. To use Kanopy Kids, login to your account and select "Go to Kanopy Kids" from the menu. You can set up Parental Controls to make sure your kids are viewing age-appropriate content on Kanopy. With Parental Controls enabled, you will need to enter your PIN when exiting Kanopy Kids in order to watch content outside of the kids collection. 

To set up Parental Controls: Log into your Kanopy account from a web or mobile browser, go to your Dashboard and select Parental Controls. Enter a 4-digit PIN of your choosing and click Save PIN. Parental controls can only be managed from a browser, though your PIN will be required to exit Kanopy Kids from any device. Learn more about Kanopy Kids.

What are The Great Courses?

The Great Courses are high quality educational content including general interest, language learning, business, learn to program, learn to draw and many, many more. Each course consists of a series of videos on the topic. Courses do not use play credits, but beginning November 1, 2020 Middlesex County Library patrons will be limited to 2 courses per month. Once you select a course and play a video you will have unlimited access to that course's content for 30 days.
